11/365 The Secret Garden

The Secret Garden 1993

I liked this movie. It was a bit different to the book, but I don't think I've read the book. However my daughter has, and we watched it together as she pointed out all the differences and gave bits away. It explores lots of issues, I particularly like the issue with Colin, everyone telling him he's sick therefore he acts sick and is sick. So tragic. It also portrays how much impact parenting has on children, yet despite this they can over-come them.

I love the magic, the innocence and of course the magnificent gardens. It's a classic, with many adaptions.  I haven't seen/read any other to compare. I recommend it. Good movie to watch with your kids.

10/365 Extreme Measures

Extreme Measure 1996.

Starring Hugh Grant and Sarah Jessica Parker before she got annoying. A doctor follows the trail of a man who mysteriously died his body disappears. It had a few twists I wasn't expecting. The movie held my interest despite some unrealistic moments. I actually really enjoyed it. Good medical/mystery. I do recommend but don't take it to seriously.

8/365 Run Fatboy Run

Run Fatboy Run 2007

What can I say, I love this movie. It's probably not appealing to a lot of people, being a bit formulaic and crude in a few places. But I like English comedy, it just seems less uptight then American comedy, not full of boobs and toilets jokes, but still risque but not juvenile.

google images
It's about a man who got cold feet at his wedding to gorgeous woman pregnant with his child. He is a bit of a loser, down on his luck and hangs out with questionable people, though he is a good father. Seeing his ex with a new man inspires him to better himself. He sounds like a jerk, but the new guy is worse. I recommend this ,movie, and will watch more movies starring Simon Pegg in the future.

7/365 Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone 2001

This was my first viewing of this movie. Really. I watched it with my daughter, and even though it went for a really long time we enjoyed it.  I can see what all the fuss was about. My daughter loved it and even stayed for the scary bits. As an adult, it captured my attention, but I didn't think it was the most brilliant thing on Earth. I'll probably get the books for my daughter, but  I won't read them.

I was impressed by the cast. Maggie Smith seems to be in a lot of movies I've watched. I can't believe how young the kids look compared to now, even though I know it's been ten years. I don't know if I will watch the rest. Probably at some stage. I do recommend watching if you are one of the minority, like me, who hadn't watched it. I still couldn't figure out how to pronounce Hermione.

6/365 A Place Called Home

A Place Called Home 2004

google images

I really enjoyed this movie. It's a TV movie, never released in cinemas, but good none-the-less. It's about an aging woman who lives in a large house on a property and is going blind. She's fiercely independent and likes to keeps to herself and is wary of visitors. Everyone (incuding her family) seems to be trying to get her to move out and she's all but givien up. Some drifters somehow wangle their way into her lives. It was a bit predictable, but it all works out in the end of course!

5/365 Fletch Lives

Fletch Lives 1989

I didn't like the Fletch movie as much as the Original, but still a mildly amusing film. There was an opportunity to do a large number of Fletch Films, but this movie just about killed any chance of that.

I don't recommend the movie at all

3/365 Runaway Vacation

Well this movie was bearable. But I think I found a movie I didn't like! It was pretty slapstick comedy. I was waiting for the movie to really get started and it didn't seem to. Light and fluffy for when you don't want to think much, with a good message I guess.

I rate it a "Meh"

2/365 Fletch

A corny 80s movie?  Maybe, but I was pleasantly surprised. I haven't seen the movie before, or at least that I can remember. I found it clever and funny, but not roll your eyes stupid. Comedy isn't my favourite genre. But this movie didn't seem like a comedy. More like a crime/mystery, with a guy that happened to be quick-witted and funny.

Movie: Waiting

I think I was waiting for something to happen!

waiting, 2005, Ryan Reynolds.

I stayed up doing some craft, and "Waiting" was on. Perhaps I only watched it be Reynolds is hot, but  I wouldn't be so shallow as that would I?

I must admit I  wasn't paying 100% attention at all times. I found the movie silly, and I didn't figure out until the end that the plot I was looking for wasn't in existance. It was gross in spots (I had to change the channel for when they made the special gravy). It was also crude, but that didn't bother me. Some of the jokes made me laugh. The actor John Francis Daley was in it, who play Sweets in Bones. I like movie connections and famliar actors. Mitch's speech at the end was epic. If you like a movie for some immature laughs and no plot, then it's for you.

Here is the plot summary according to IMDB

It's the dinner shift at Shenanigan's. Dan, the clueless boss, assigns Mitch, 22, a trainee, to Monty, the smooth talker who chases girls for one-night stands. Dean, a waiter, also 22, feels that life is passing him by. Dan offers him the assistant manager job and gives him until midnight to decide. Other waiters, cooks, and bus boys have their issues and personalities. Bishop, the dishwasher, is their counselor. During this shift, Monty may learn something, Dean makes his decision, Dan makes a play for the not-yet-18 hostess, customers get their comeuppance, the guys all play the in-house homophobic flashing game, the gals demonstrate why they won't, and Mitch gets the last word.

Big

Big, 1988, Tom Hanks.

What a delightful movie. What should be a possibly cheesy movie, turned out well. What struck me as amusing was how young Tom Hanks looked, and supposed to be playing a 30 year old. Then I discovered he was infact 32 at the time.

DVD cover. Big

It made me a little nostalgic of the 80s, when movies and actors weren't so glamorous and over done, but more real, more curvy. The were no great special affects or CGI, but rather, solid acting. Special mention must be made to the old computer, the walkie talkies and the girls 80s hair. Brilliant.

Here's the plot summary for Big, according to IMDB. I spend way too much time on IMDB. A young boy named Josh Baskin, wish one day from an old machine to be big, despite the fact that he does not believe it is going to work. He is very surprised, therefore, to find himself in the next day- big. Now he looks like a 30 years old guy, but he still behave like a twelve years boy. He decide to go with his best friend to New York, to find the machine that can fix his wish. In New York he gets a job in a toy company, and develop a relationship. Currently, he must learn to get used to the adults world he always wanted to be part of. Would he still like to remain an adult?IMDB "Big"

The awesome floor piano songs, is a classic scene. It looked like so much fun, I want a go.

Why does his shirt look like pyjamas?
Then the silly string scene also made me giggle. Josh and Billy had cans of silly string and were making jokes, with the silly string acting as gross out props. Such as "Achoo" and squirt the silly string as if it's coming out your nose. Coughing: Silly string out your mouth. Vomiting: silly string in your hand etc.

Bleeeuuuuggh
It was funny, I enjoyed it.

Quotes:
1. BILLY: Hey. Hey. Hey! You ever go by Simpson's desk when she's grading papers or somethin'? When she's leaned over, you can see right down her shirt.

JOSH: No!

BILLY: Swear to God.

JOSH: Bra?

BILLY: No. No. She's got one of those undershirt things. So if you get real close to the board, you can see all the way down to her flowers.

2.WOMAN: Hi. Okay, so how would you like that?

JOSH: Three dimes, a hundred dollar bill, and eighty seven ones.

3.MacMillan: You can't see this on a marketing report.

Josh: Um, what's a marketing report?

MacMillan: Exactly.

4. Susan: I'm not so sure we should do this.

Josh: Do what?

Susan: Well, I like you, and I want to spend the night with you.

Josh: Do you mean sleep over?

Susan: Well, yeah.

Josh: OK... but I get to be on top.

5. Interviewer: Where did you go to school?

Josh: It was called George Washington.

Interviewer: Oh G.W. My brother-in-law got his doctorate there. Did you pledge?

Josh: Yes. Every morning.

Trivia:

1. Robert Loggia who played MacMillian has naturally white hair and eyebrows that he usually gets dyed for movies

2. Debra Jo Rupp (Kitty from That 70s show) makes an appearance as a secretary.

3.Penny Marshall became the first female director to ever direct a movie that grossed more than $100 million at the box office with this movie.

4. There is rumour an alternative end which 1000s of people swear they saw and the films producer denies having existed. In this ending Susan becomes younger and Josh sees her in class.

Once Upon a Time in the West

I watch movies often. I can't go long without watching a movie. I have no favourite genre, I like them all. In fact a movie has to be really really bad for me not to like. When i am sick, I watch a lot of movies at once. I can't keep track. So in the interests of documenting and reviewing what I watch, here goes. As an added bonus, I intend to watch every movie in the top 250 on IMDB.http://www.imdb.com/chart/top?tt0064116 . As luck would have it, Once Upon a Time in the West (OuaTitW) is on the top 250, at #24 to be precise.

I was bored, there was nothing on the telly. Election night, all regular programming was cancelled and watching the election coverage got very boring. OMG I forgot to actually see who our Prime Minister is! BRB. Well apparently its a draw, nevermind, back to the movie. This movie was seriously the only thing on TV, it got very good reviews in the TV guide, and my interest was piqued. I missed a little at the start while I convinced the family that we should watch it. It was a loooooooooooooooooooooong movie, and on the ABC so no ads. It was almost 3 hours long, with NO ADS.

To start with, nothing much happened, just a bunch of dirty men sitting around waiting for something. One man had fly crawl on his face and he tried getting rid of it using facial muscles and blowing on it, but it wouldn't shift. It was like he was too lazy to swat at it, though eventually he did. The fly flew away near by and the man got out his gun. "He's not going to shoot the fly, is he?" I asked increduously. He didn't, he just caught it in the end of the gun, some mad skillz he had. So this scene went on for ages, no one was talking, no one was doing much of anything. Almost turned the TV off, but something about it captivated me. It was like that the whole movie; slow, deliberate, engaging, not much dialogue. Lots of face shots, scenery shots and unbelievable music to set the mood.It so very hard to explain, it was so captivating, after I got used to the pace. Every scene, long and slow. There was little action, and barely any violence even though an extraordinary amount of people met their end with the aid of a bullet. I didn't know what was going on some of the time, and got the men and the respective gangs a little mixed up. All unwashed, leathery western men kind of look the same. So I really enjoyed the film, and would watch it again and pay much more attention to the details and the dialogue.

*****

Cheyenne: The bad guy? Or is he the good guy?

*****

Frank: The bad guy, he really is, but look at those eyes.

*****

Harmonica: He likes to play the harmonica(duh), who is he really?

Intersting facts

1. Henry Fonda was in his 60s when he played Frank.

2 The three main actors (Pictured) have since all passed away (well Henry Fonda would be 105).

3. The Movie is actually Italian. Called C'era una volta il West.

4. The leading lady, Claudia Cardinale, is very pretty, and busty.

5. Only 11 actors in the movie were credited.

6. Two of the McBain children are siblings in real life.

7. A bit part actor commited suicide in costume, and all the Director was worried about was getting the costume back! (OMG)

Some Quotes:

Morton: Not bad. Congratulations. Tell me, was it necessary that you kill all of them? I only told you to scare them.
Frank: People scare better when they're dying.
**************************
Frank: How can you trust a man who wears both a belt and suspenders? The man can't even trust his own pants.
***************************
Harmonica: And Frank?
Snaky: Frank sent us.
Harmonica: Did you bring a horse for me?
Snaky: Well... looks like we're...
[snickers]
Snaky: ...looks like we're shy one horse.
Harmonica: You brought two too many.
***************************
Cheyenne: Harmonica, a town built around a railroad.
[laughs]
Cheyenne: You could make a fortune. Hundreds of thousands of dollars. Hey, more than that. Thousands of thousands.
Harmonica: They call them "millions."
Cheyenne: "Millions." Hmm.
***************************
Cheyenne: You deserve better.
Jill: The last man who told me that... is buried out there.
